Lab results, batch by batch

Ethiopia Kayon, Peru Palto and Ethiopia Suke were sent as green lots to independent laboratories before we roasted them, and we publish what came back, whether it flatters us or not. Each report says the same thing: not detected. Kayon and Palto are on sale now. The Suke lot has sold out, and its report stays below as a record. The other coffees on our shelf have not been screened and are not scheduled to be. We say so plainly, rather than borrow another coffee's result.

What we screen for

Ochratoxin A. Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2. Pesticides and herbicides, screened by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS across several hundred compounds. All on the green bean, before we roast, at independent laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.

Why the green bean

Roasting reduces ochratoxin. Testing the finished coffee flatters the number. We test earlier, on the green bean, where the contamination forms. The honest measure is the harder one.

How to read this

A part per billion is one milligram in a tonne. Not detected means the compound sat below the laboratory's limit of detection. Results are reported against the international reference methods, and each report is published in full.

Organic, honestly

Ethiopia Kayon and Peru Palto come from certified-organic farms. The certificates are the farms'; our roastery is not a certified handler, so no tin carries a seal. Our Malaysian Liberica is grown without synthetic inputs but not certified, and we do not call it organic. Our Colombian coffees carry no certificate either; the farm reports no synthetic inputs. We do not blur the line.
