Liberica coffee in Malaysia

Liberica is the coffee Malaysia never stopped growing. It came here in the late nineteenth century, when leaf rust was ruining arabica across Asia, and it stayed in the ground while the rest of the world forgot it. A 2025 Kew-led study puts Liberica and excelsa together at probably under 1,000 tonnes, about 0.01 per cent of world coffee exports. The three species, compared. The case for Liberica, in long form.

The Liberica we roast

Sarawak Liberica Long Banga Honey. Libex, a hybrid of Liberica and excelsa, from a single estate at Long Banga, 500 metres up in Sarawak's Marudi District. Honey-processed. Tangerine, brown sugar and milk chocolate, with coconut underneath, and a wide, low note arabica cannot reach.

Is Liberica the same as kopi?
Same species, different treatment. Traditional kopi roasts Liberica dark with margarine and sugar. Ours is single-estate and roasted clean, so you taste the species itself.

Is Malaysian Liberica organic?
Our Long Banga lot is grown without synthetic inputs, so without glyphosate. It is uncertified, so we do not call it organic, and we state that plainly.
