Single origin means the coffee in the bag comes from one place: one farm, one lot, one harvest, not blended with beans from elsewhere. It lets you taste a specific place and season, and it keeps the coffee traceable back to the people who grew it.
It is a phrase the industry uses loosely. Worth knowing how loose, and where we draw the line.
One place, at different resolutions
Single origin can mean a country, a region, or a single farm, and the three are not equal. A bag labelled by country tells you very little; the coffee inside could be a blend of many farms. We work at the level that actually means something: one farm or estate, one lot, one harvest. That is the resolution at which a coffee has a character you can return to.
Why it is not the same as a blend
A blend mixes beans to hit a consistent, repeatable taste, the same cup every time. That is useful for an espresso bar. Single origin does the opposite: it lets a coffee taste of where and when it grew, which means it changes with the season. The shelf is never quite the same twice, and that is the point.
Why traceability matters
One farm, one lot, one harvest is also a chain of custody. It is what lets us test a specific batch and file the result against it, and what lets you read the origin on the bag and trust it. It is the same traceability our testing depends on. Every coffee we carry is single origin at the farm level.
