No. Organic certification restricts synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, but it permits a list of approved treatments, copper-based fungicides among them. It governs the farm, not the cup. Residue surveys on roasted coffee generally find little or nothing, whether the coffee is certified or not. The clearest case for organic is the health of the people who grow it.
This is the least convenient answer we give. It is also the one we are most sure of.
What the certificate actually restricts
Organic certification is a farming standard. It prohibits synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilisers and genetically modified planting material. It sets a conversion period of roughly three years before a farm can sell as organic. It requires records an auditor can follow, and buffer zones between organic land and whatever is happening next door.
What it does not do is prohibit crop protection.
Certified growers may use a defined list of permitted substances. Copper-based fungicides are the best-known, used against coffee leaf rust and berry disease, permitted under the major organic standards within application limits. Mineral and botanical treatments are allowed too. A coffee can be honestly, fully certified and still have been sprayed with something.
That is not a scandal. It is what the word means. Organic is a decision about which inputs are acceptable, not a vow of abstention. What organic and specialty each cover.
What ends up on roasted coffee
Coffee is an unusual crop from a residue point of view, for reasons that are physical rather than moral.
The part you drink is a seed inside a fruit, and the fruit comes off at the farm. The seed is then washed or dried, hulled, sorted, shipped, roasted for minutes at temperatures above 200 °C, ground, and steeped in hot water with most of the solids left behind in the filter. Every step of that is unkind to a residue. Residue surveys on roasted coffee tend to report results below detection limits, or well under legal maximums, in conventional coffee as much as in organic.
So if the question is strictly about traces in your cup, certification is answering a question that mostly answers itself.
Where the pesticide problem is real
At the farm.
The people who mix and apply agrochemicals absorb them at concentrations no drinker will ever approach. Occupational research on coffee farm workers, including work published by Hutter and colleagues in 2018, has reported health effects associated with agrochemical exposure on conventional plantations. That harm is real, it is measurable, and it is borne entirely by people who never see the retail bag.
There is also the soil under the farm, the water below it, and the families living inside the spray zone. None of it appears in a residue survey of a roasted bean. All of it is a reason to buy organic.
What a laboratory can tell you that a label cannot
A certificate describes what happened at the farm. It says nothing about what a green bean picked up in a humid warehouse or a slow container.
For that, the bean has to be tested. We screen green coffee before roasting at independent laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, for ochratoxin A, for aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2, and for pesticide residues. Each report is published on the page of the coffee it covers as the lot clears. So far the findings read the same way each time: not detected, against the laboratory's limit of detection. We do not say every lot has been tested, because it has not been. Reports currently cover three of our coffees. More clear over time, and we publish them as they do.
So is organic worth choosing
Yes, for reasons that sit at the farm rather than in the cup. Less synthetic input into soil and water. Better conditions for the people who would otherwise be doing the spraying. A system that has to keep records and submit to an audit.
What we would not tell you is that it tastes better, carries more antioxidants, or contains fewer mycotoxins. There is no consistent evidence for any of the three. Dietary studies do show that people who switch to a broadly organic diet have lower pesticide metabolite levels in their urine within days, which is a real finding about a whole diet, not about one cup of coffee.
Our arabica range is certified organic. The two Malaysian Libericas are organic by practice, grown without synthetic inputs on farms too small to justify the cost of certification. We test either way. Why we chose organic, at length.
