There is no good evidence that coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world. The claim is repeated constantly and sourced almost nowhere. No public agricultural dataset ranks coffee near the top for pesticide intensity, and residue surveys of roasted coffee generally report low or undetectable levels. The documented pesticide harm in coffee is real, and it happens at the farm.
We have used that line ourselves. It was wrong, and this is us putting it down.
Where the claim comes from
You will find it on bags, on blog posts, in wellness newsletters and in advertising, usually phrased as coffee being the second or third most chemically treated crop on earth. Follow the citation and it ends in another article making the same claim. Follow that one and the trail goes cold.
The idea is plausible enough to survive without a source. Coffee is a tropical crop, tropical crops face heavy pest and fungal pressure, and coffee leaf rust is a genuine and continuing problem. From there it is a short step to assuming the crop is drenched. Plausible is not the same as measured.
Why it does not hold up
Pesticide use is measured by application rate per hectare and by total volume, and those figures exist for major crops. Cotton, maize, soya, rice, potatoes and orchard fruit dominate them. Coffee does not appear near the top of any ranking we have been able to find, and the versions of the claim in circulation never name one.
There is also a structural reason to expect coffee to look better than most crops at the point of drinking, and it has nothing to do with virtue. Consider what happens between the tree and the cup. The part of the fruit most exposed to anything sprayed is the skin and pulp, and that is removed during processing. The bean is then hulled, losing another layer. Roasting takes it above 200 °C, which degrades many residues, though not all of them. Brewing extracts with hot water, and a paper filter holds back some of what remains.
That chain is why national residue monitoring programmes generally report low or undetectable residues in roasted and brewed coffee. It is worth saying plainly what that does not mean. Low is not zero. Detections do occur, monitoring quality varies by country and by year, and no survey covers all of what reaches a shelf.
What is actually true
The harm is at the farm, and it is documented.
Research on coffee farm workers, including work published by Hutter and colleagues in 2018, has found health harms associated with agrochemical exposure on conventional coffee farms. Mixing and applying concentrate, often in heat, frequently without adequate protective equipment, is a different order of exposure from drinking a filtered cup. The person at risk is the person holding the sprayer.
This is the honest case for organic coffee, and it is a stronger one than the myth it replaces. It just points somewhere other than at your own body. Why we buy organic.
Why we still choose organic farms, and test anyway
Two reasons, neither of which requires the sprayed-crop story.
First, grower welfare and lower synthetic input use at origin are worth paying for on their own terms. Our arabica range is certified organic. Our two Malaysian Libericas are grown without synthetic inputs and are not certified, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. What organic specialty coffee means.
Second, a certificate describes a farm and not a bean. The only thing that describes what is in a specific lot is a laboratory result. We screen green beans before roasting at independent laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, for ochratoxin A, for aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2, and for pesticide residues, and publish each report as the lot clears. Three coffees are covered so far. Results to date read as not detected, against the laboratory limit of detection. The reports.
Testing is less dramatic than a scare statistic. It is also the only part of this that constitutes evidence.
A note on our own copy
The sprayed-crop line has appeared in our advertising. It was easy to write, it made the case quickly, and it was not supported. We have stopped using it and we are correcting it here rather than quietly deleting it, because a brand that asks people to trust laboratory reports does not get to be selective about which of its own claims it checks.
The version that survives scrutiny is narrower and less alarming. It is also true, which turns out to be the more useful property. The standard we hold.
